Red Yeast Rice is white rice fermented with Monascus purpureus red yeast. Used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine, Red Yeast Rice contains monacolin compounds, specifically Monacolin K, which is chemically identical to the cholesterol-lowering drug, lovastatin. Policosanols are long-chained alcohols that are part of the wax-like material in plants and seeds. In supplement form, Policosanol is extracted from the coating of sugar cane, Saccharum officinarum. Cuban-based research suggests Policosanol may help lower cholesterol. However, all studies outside of Cuba have failed to confirm these findings.
