HOW MUCH WEB SPACE WILL I NEED?
The average Web Site, will probably use less than 10MB of web space, and most certainly will never use 50MB. The largest files for the average site are generally graphics, but if they are properly optimized
[info/instructions], they need not take up a lot of space. Sound files can also be fairly large, but generally a site will have just one sound file, if any.
All of the informational pages on WebHelps.com, including all required ASP.NET supporting files (1,764 files) use just 16.7mb of web space.
Of course, if you provide files for download on your site (such as photos, documents, music, and/or spreadsheets), your hosting plan must provide enough space to store those files, which may be quite large. Similarly, your site may allow visitors to post comments (such as guestbook and message board) and/or upload files (such as photos). In this case, you must be certain your web space can accommodate the number of users you expect and can thereafter automatically increase as needed.
The more advanced your site and the more features it has, the more space you will need, but probably not nearly as much as you might think. Flash files can be quite large, but with a Flash header (for example), the same file is used on every page of the site. A database, such as Access, MySQL, or SQL will require additional space, but generally the program itself is provided by the web host and you must only store the data files.
As a general rule, web hosts today provide far more web storage space in their hosting plans than customers will ever use. Knowing this, they can offer plans with huge amounts of storage space for very little cost, because they know the space will never actually be used. So, when comparing hosting plans, you should probably pay little attention to the amounts of storage space, and a lot of attention to the additional features and services that come with the plans. If you will be allowing visitors to download files from your site, or you expect to have a lot of traffic, then you will want to be certain the plan you choose includes adequate bandwidth. Additional storage space is generally much less expensive than additional bandwidth.
Below are some size examples, so you can get an idea of how much space you might need for your site:
