Administrator
The Administrator may perform the following tasks, most of which are unavailable to other types of users:
- Add/delete users
- Designate user types
- Kick
- Set Room Password
- Set Welcome Message
- Enable Profanity Filter
- Ban Users
- Customize
- Upload sounds/avatars
The Administrative room (applet) can be reached by clicking the Administrative Chat Room link in the Chat Room Administrator. |
Applet
The window our chat room loads into is the "applet." An applet is a Java program that runs from a browser window. We provide several tools to customize the size, text and colors of the chat room applet, in addition to an Extreme HTML Customization option for the space on the page surrounding the applet. These can be found by clicking the Chat Applet Settings link in the Chat Room Administrator.
Archives
Also known as transcripts, archives contain a text record of the text conversations taken place in the chat room. Transcripts only record text messages sent within the chat room. Sounds, emoticons, private conversations or voice messages are NOT recorded. Transcripts may be obtained through 2 methods:
- The Administrator can click the [Save Transcript] button located in the Administrative Room. A text copy will be stored to the his/her hard drive.
- Normal users can obtain transcripts by clicking the link located below the chat room applet labeled Click Here to permanently set your personal colors or to clear your avatar. A new window will open with options to select the transcript date and the file format to save the transcript in. [NOTE: The Administrator must have transcripts ENABLED before normal users may access them. Transcripts are typically archived for 2 weeks and then deleted.
|
Avatar
A graphic representation of a chat user. The avatar will appear next to the user's name and text in the chat room. Registration is required for users to permanently set an avatar.
Ban
A means to permanently kick a user out of a chat room. Banning is done by username and IP address. This ensures that a user cannot simply register under anotherusername and enter the room again. IMPORTANT: IP Addresses can be tricky. Quite often, networks use the same internet IP address. As a result, banning somebody on a network, may ban everybody on that network. Some internet connections use a rotating IP address system. This can make it difficult to ban certain users, because the next time they login, they have a brand new IP address. Registration is required for this feature to work.
Banners
Administrators may upload up to 25 of their own banners. These banners will be rotated in the top portion of the chat applet.
Basic Login
Logs people into the room with minimum features enabled. This login is for people with older computers or slow Internet connections who have trouble or long load times when trying to access the room using the Regular Login Code.
Buddy
Users can add other users to their personal buddy list. A user's buddy list can be accessed by clicking the [Buddies] button on the top of the chat applet. The Buddies list allow a user to be notified when his/her buddies enter the chat room. This also allows a user to contact his/her buddies directly in the chat room via private chat. Registration is required for this feature.
Dynamic Login Link
If you have your own dynamic website that requires login, this will allow you to have users enter the chat room by clicking a link.
Float
Float the chat interface as a separate window from the browser. This button is found at the top of the chat room applet. A depressed button indicates that the interface is currently floated.
Kick
Allows the Administrator, a monitor or moderator to temporarily kick a user out of the chat room. NOTE: This does not prevent users from immediately logging back into the room.
Login Form Code
HTML code to display a chat room login form on your web site. This can be obtained by clicking the Access Room/Add to Site link in the Chat Room Manager.
Moderator
A moderator controls conference-style chat sessions, whereby messages are sent to the moderator for viewing before they are sent to the chat room to be seen by other normal users. Moderators may appoint speakers as well as silence certain users. Moderators can speak (voice) to the entire room by using the [Start Broadcast] button in the Moderator's applet. The Administrator can designate normal users as moderators by clicking the View User List link in the Chat Room Manager. The Moderation feature is only available with a Voice Chat Room.
Monitor
A Monitor is endowed with the power to kick and ban users from the chat room. The Administrator can designate normal users as monitors by clicking the View User List link in the Chat Room Manager.
Pass
Passing sends selected chat messages from a Moderator to the appointed Speaker.
Pass Ratio
Determines the number of passes a message requires before being shown in the room. For example, if the pass ratio is “1”, and the room has 3 moderators, only one moderator needs to pass the message for it to be shown. Percentages can also be used. For a pass ratio of “66%”, again with 3 moderators, two are now required to pass the message for it to be shown. Use “0” to indicate that all moderators have to pass a message.
Private Chat
Two users may have a private conversation outside the main chat room. This conversation does not get logged into the chat room transcripts. The private chat option can be disabled by clicking the Applet Settings link in the Chat Room Manager.
Regular Login
Logs people into the room with all features enabled. This is generally how most people should login to the room.
Normal User
Chat room users who may text chat or voice chat, but have no administrative rights.
Silence>
Moderators may select a user and silence them temporarily.
Speaker
The person speaking to the room, whom the room moderator passes messages to from the normal users in the room. The Administrator can set certain users as Speakers by clicking the View User List link in the Chat Room Manager. A moderator may also temporarily assign a user as a Speaker from the moderator's room.
Spectator
A user who can enter the chat room and read the text conversation, but may not participate. A special Spectator Login form is required for Spectators to enter the room. This can be obtained by clicking the Access Room/Add to Site link in the Chat Room Manager.
Transcripts
See Archives.
Users
| There are 6 different types of chat room users:
|
Voice Chat
A chat room feature that allows people to participate in one-to-one voice conversations. Requires a sound card, microphone and Sun's Java plug-in version 1.3.1 or higher.
Voice Conferencing
Included with the Voice Chat feature. Voice Conferencing allows a Moderator or Speaker to broadcast voice messages to all users in the chat room.
